Asia It is important that a child’s reading experience is successful, as this will not only improve their reading skills, but also help them view reading as pleasurable. Your child is perhaps happy to share which topics are appealing to them. However, it’s also handy for you to be able judge if a chosen book is a good match for the reading level of your child.
In previous posts, we’ve discussed AVI levels that reflect the “technical” complexity of a book, and the A, B, C, and D categories that group together books suitable for a certain age. Now, we’ll show you how we search online for the AVI level and a group age of a specific book.
Running example: De regels van Floor
Say, your child has just watched an episode of “De regels van Floor”, and you’d like to help them find a book about more fun adventures of Floor and the peculiar rules she invents.

I usually start my little research in the library catalogue. If you search for “De regels van Floor” on your library website, you’ll see that Marjon Hoffman has written a whole series of books about Floor! Let’s take the first one, “Floor regelt door”. Its site shows that it’s recommended for 8-year-old children and older (“Vanaf ca. 8 jaar“) .
If you scroll further down, you’ll notice that it’s located in various libraries on A bookshelves (“Verhalen A HOFF”), so it belongs to the A category:

If the library catalogue does not provide you with enough information, it may be also worth checking https://www.bol.com/. When you search for “Floor regelt door”, you can see the AVI level already in the overview.
The “Alle productspecificaties” (“All details”) section of the website provides even more details. When you click on “Toon meer” (“Show more”), you’ll read that it’s an AVI-E6 book, and that the “Aanbevolen leeftijd” (“Recommended age”) is 8-12 years.
Summary
We’ve looked into the first randomly chosen book about Floor, “Floor regelt door”.
Its AVI level is AVI-E6, so “on average”, it’s recommended for children in the second half of group 6. However, there are children who acquire their reading skills quickly, and they may be able to read it in group 4 or 5. And, there are children who are slower readers and they may need more time. It’s all individual. If you have doubts, just talk to the teacher of your child. They know it all!
The recommended age 8-12 years. The library has classified it as an A book, which means that the topic is suitable for 6-9 year olds. Our personal experience is that a 7 or 8 year old child will enjoy it!
